White House Official Marks America’s 250th Birthday by Declaring the President Ordained by God

Nothing says “250 years of secular democratic government” quite like a sitting White House Deputy Chief of Staff announcing that the president was hand-picked by the Almighty. On July 4th, Stephen Miller took to X to inform the nation that “it is impossible to review the events of the last decade and conclude that it is anything other than divine providence that Donald J. Trump is the President of the United States.”

Setting aside the events of the last decade, which include several things a benevolent deity would probably not sign off on, the timing here is the real gift. Independence Day. The 250th anniversary. A senior government official casually upgrading his boss’s résumé from “elected official” to “chosen one.”

The internet, as it does, noticed the vibe shift immediately, with plenty of commentary drawing comparisons to cult messaging rather than campaign messaging. Somewhere, the Founding Fathers are checking to make sure the separation of church and state didn’t quietly expire with a rider attached to an appropriations bill.

We’re filing this one under Sightings because apparently you don’t need to see a figure in the clouds anymore. You can just post about it.

Don’t take our word for it: The Daily Beast has the full story. It’s exactly as described.
